In memory of

Eva Riddell

of Philip, South Dakota, died on Sunday, April 19, 1998 at the Hans P. Peterson Memorial Hospital in Philip at the age of 82

Eva Smith was born September 13, 1915, at her home of her parents, Ray E. and Dorothy (Teeters) Smith, 17 miles northwest of Philip, South Dakota.  She had one sister, Ilo (Smith) Rausch, who was born January 12, 1918.

She grew up in this area and attended the South Schoening School, grades one through eight.  She attended Philip High School and graduated in May 1933.  She attended Spearfish Normal for one year, receiving a First Grade Certificate.  She then taught two years in the South Schoening District.

She was united in marriage to Howard Alan Riddell on June 3, 1936, at a home wedding.  To this union was born two children, Alan and Reva.

They farmed and ranched his parents' homestead east of the Grindstone Buttes, which was north and west of Philip, until they retired and moved into Philip in 1973.

After her husband, Howard's death on October 2, 1984, she continued to make her home in Philip.

Eva was a member of the United Church and the Women's Society, where she held various offices.  She was very active in many other organizations through the years, including Butte View Women's Club, the Hospital Auxiliary, United Methodist Women, and the Bad River Senior Citizens Center.

Eva was a loving wife and mother and always had time to help her friends and neighbors.

Grateful for having shared her life are her son, Alan Riddell and his wife, Deb, of Milwaukee, Wisconsin; their children, Ryan Riddell of Milwaukee, Dan Riddell and his wife, Stephanie, of Waukesha, Wisconsin, Randy Riddell of Phoenix, Arizona, Rosemary Gruett and her husband, Mike, and their daughter, Christina, of Heartland, Wisconsin, and Alan Ray Riddell, Jr. of Milwaukee; a daughter, Reva Stedman and her husband, Rich, of Mitchell, South Dakota; their children, Russ Stedman and his wife, Solvei, of Sioux Falls, Rochelle Sailer and her husband, Shannon, of Rapid City; numerous nieces and nephews and cousins; and a host of other relatives and friends.

In addition to her husband, Howard, she was preceded in death by her parents and a sister, Ilo Rausch.

A memorial is established to the United Church of Philip.
