of Philip, South Dakota, died on Wednesday, February 5, 1992 at his home in Philip at the age of 80
Hollis Young was born September 19, 1911, at Fort Pierre, South Dakota, to Milton and Iola Bertha (Peterson) Young.
His grandfather, Warren Young, and his dad, Milton Young, were associated in the Land Abstract business with Scotty Philip. His grandfather also served in the South Dakota Legislature.
The family lived briefly in Philip before moving to a homestead in Old Stanley County south and east of Philip. This is where Hollis grew up. He attended South Creek Country School and Philip Elementary School before attending Willow Creek Country School, north of Kadoka.
In later years Hollis took over the operation on the Young homestead and has continued until the time of his death.
Hollis was very well read and was a self-taught conservationist and environmentalist, of which he practiced on his farm/ranch.
He was an avid sportsman, enjoying hunting and working with the wildlife. He was an excellent self-taught gunsmith as well as wood worker, building gun stocks and cabinets.
Grateful for having shared his life are his two brothers, Howard Young of Philip, and Benjamin Harris Young of Flint, Michigan; three sisters, Ilene Handley of Baldwin, Michigan, Inez Bingham of Escondido, California, and Iola Luckham of Chula Vista, California; and a host of other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
