Vivian A. Newby was born June 24, 1913, on her mother's homestead 30 miles north of Midland to Harry and Maude (Wadell) Newby.

She grew up on the homestead and received her elementary education in rural schools prior to graduating from Pierre High School.  She attended church and Sunday School in the school house located about three miles north of the old Davenport post office.  She attended Northern State Teacher's College in Aberdeen, South Dakota.

Vivian taught rural school for six years in Haakon and Stanley counties.  She was a member of the Little Brown Church near Hayes, South Dakota, where she also sang in the choir.

Vivian was united in marriage to Elmer C. Bork on January 28, 1938, at Rapid City, South Dakota.  They made their home on Elmer's ranch located about 12 miles south of Midland.

She taught rural school in the Stamford area for one year.

They operated the ranch all their married life and after Elmer's death on March 9, 1974, Vivian continued to live on the ranch until the time of her death.

She was a member of the Belvidere Presbyterian Church where she served as trustee for several years and was a Sunday School teacher and choir member for 12 years.  She was president of the United Presbyterian Women for eight years, was Black Hills Presbyterial Officer for six years, and was a delegate to Purdue in 1967.

She was a member of the Stamford Ladies Aid where she had served as president for seven consecutive years and then intermittently as secretary, treasurer, and president.  She served as a Stamford school board member for 30 years, and was a member of the Extension clubs of Moenville, Belvidere, and Okaton, South Dakota.

She was a member of the state and national Cowbelles and had served as Jackson County secretary of the Cowbelles for one year, and was a precinct Republican committee woman in Jackson County.  She was president of the Newby Ranch, Inc., for ten years and secretary of the Murdo P.T.A. for two years.

Grateful for having shared her life are her son, Paul Bork of Midland, South Dakota; two daughters, Kay Benton of Hot Springs, South Dakota, and Deborah Searle of Orange City, Florida; nine grandchildren; one great-grandson; four sisters, Helen Ostlien of Midland, Marge Pellerzi and Lois Lunn, both of Pierre, and Ruth Eich of Riggins, Idaho; and a host of other relatives and friends.
