Peggy Staben

of Philip, South Dakota, died on Monday, September 26, 2022 at the Hans P. Peterson Memorial Hospital in Philip at the age of 86

Peggy Ann Justice was born January 2, 1936, in Ft. Pierre, South Dakota to Jess and Verna (Milton) Justice. She attended her first three years of school in Ft. Pierre. In 1945 her mother died, and she was sent to Philip to live with her Aunt Lena Zea. Peggy graduated from Philip High School in 1954. She then worked for Northwestern Bell Telephone Company until 1962 when they went to dial phones. Peggy then worked a short time at Ringers Appliance Store.

Peggy was united in marriage to Dwane Staben on June 1, 1963 at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in Philip. They lived on a farm northeast of Milesville where they raised their three children.

Dwane died on September 26, 1990. Peggy continued to live on the farm until she bought a house and moved into Philip in 2007. She was a member of Our Redeemer Lutheran Church, Redeemer LWML, the Bad River Senior Citizens Center, and the Red Hats of the 50’s.

Survivors include three children: Charles Staben of Milesville, Sandra (Robert) Harrowa of Rapid City, and Jeffrey (Terri) Staben of Milesville; two granddaughters Leah and Zoe; one sister Dorothy Pierce of Price, Utah; two sisters-in-law Elaine Staben of Bozeman, Montana, and Glenda Justice of Vancouver, Washington; three “special” grandchildren Wade, Andi, and Kayla; many nieces, nephews, and a host of other relatives and friends.

Peggy was preceded in death by her husband Dwane, her parents, four brothers Charles, Donald, Richard and Jess, and two sisters Joyce and June.

Funeral services will be held 10:00 a.m. Thursday, September 29, at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in Philip, with Pastor Gregory Hinners and Pastor Ray Greenseth officiating.

Interment will be at the Masonic Cemetery in Philip.

  • Dear Aunt Peggy, as we gather from near and far this morning to say our final goodbyes to you I just want to thank you for a lifetime of love. Your steadfastness was a blessing to so very many as you were always there to welcome us with a beautiful home, food to eat, beds to sleep in and fellowship. So very many will miss you for the rest of our lives.
All my love to Charles, Sandra, Jeff and their families. Kisses to Leah and Zoe.
    Love, Susie

  • Peggy, you were family to us! We were blessed to have you care for Nick and Carson when we needed. Warm cookies and all the 'cool' toys were at Grandma Peggy's house! We were lucky to be your neighbors, but blessed to be your friends! We will dearly miss you- I enjoyed our visits very much. We are so proud of you, you were brave to the end. Rest easy now...I hear they have someone do ALL the dusting and vacuuming in heaven! Thoughts of comfort to Charles, Sandra, Jeff and families. She was one of a kind! ~ Jason and Vonda Hamill Milesville (9/27/2022)
