Kelvin and his siblings spent their young lives growing up on the family farm in Harrold, South Dakota. Kelvin graduated from Harrold High School in the 1970s. After graduating Kelvin furthered his education at Mitchell Tech and obtained a certificate in agriculture. After college he went on to fulfill his dreams of OTR trucking and farming in SD, ND, MN, and WI.

Kelvin then met Joann O'Connor and her two children, Jon and Scott Buus in 1994. Later in 1999 the couple learned that their stillborn son, Travis, had died in utero. They married in February 2000 and divorced in 2006. Joann and Kelvin later reunited as partners in 2014 until his passing.

Throughout Kelvin's life he enjoyed fishing, hunting, gardening, and watching sports. He also had a love for his dogs that could not be described. Kelvin felt tremendous joy while spending time with his children and grandchildren along with a sense of freedom when able to attend their extracurricular activities.
