of Ft. Pierre, South Dakota, died on Friday, June 27, 2025 at Peaceful Pines Senior Living in Ft. Pierre at the age of 93
Shirley Grace (Schervem) Vik was born March 26, 1932, in Presho, South Dakota, to Nels Louis and Cjerstina (Hilmoe) Schervem at the Ida Mallet Nursing Home. She grew up in Mellette County but acquired her education in Lyman County country schools, graduating from Vivian High School in 1950. She then attended two summer sessions at Black Hills State College and taught two years in country schools where she met her husband-to-be, Raymond Vik. They were married June 7, 1952.
Shirley was baptized as an infant in the Hilmoe-White River Lutheran Church south of Presho and confirmed at the age of 14 in the Vivian Lutheran Church. She joined the Draper UMC in 1961 where she was active teaching and serving on the board as treasurer and secretary for several years.
Shirley and Ray moved to Parkwood in Pierre in 2017. Ray died in 2020, and in 2024 Shirley moved to Peaceful Pines in Ft. Pierre, where she has since resided.
She belonged to the Happy Hour Club and a square dance club. Shirley and Ray square danced in most of the states and part of Canada, Switzerland and Austria. She enjoyed reading, traveling, growing flowers, painting, crossword puzzles, dancing and square dancing in her younger years. Her main love was her family of five children and husband Ray.
She leaves to mourn her children Steve Vik of Draper, Ken (Cindy) Vik of Hettinger, ND, Kathy (Dave) Fuoss of Draper, Brian (Linda) Vik of Barnesville, MN, and Doug Vik of Weatherford, Texas; 7 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews, and friends.
In addition to her husband Ray, Shirley was preceded in death by her parents; a brother Orlo Schervem; a sister Alice King, and grandson Mike Fuoss.
Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. CDT on Monday, July 7, at the United Methodist Church in Draper.
Interment will follow at the Draper Cemetery.
