of Philip, South Dakota, died on Wednesday, May 27, 2026 at Hans P. Peterson Memorial Hospital in Philip at the age of 83
Donald Richard King, better known as Rick to his family and friends, was born November 26, 1942, in Philip, South Dakota to Donald I. and Eileen V. (Pollreisz) King. He grew up in the rural Philip area and attended Elbon School and later Philip High School where he graduated in 1961. After graduation he attended Southern State College in Springfield.
Rick was united in marriage to Donna Lee Nachtigall on January 19, 1963, and to this union five children were born: Donald, Chad, Richard, Clay, and Jennifer.
Rick was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Milesville where he was baptized and attended his whole life.
Rick was a dedicated rancher who began raising sheep from 1963-1971, and then cattle the rest of his years. He served on the FHA Board and Haakon County Conservation Board. He was the South Dakota Limousine Producer of the Year in 2017 and won a Natural Resources award in 2015 from Haakon County Conservation District.
Survivors include his wife Donna; four children Chip (Jonna and Family) King of Philip, Chad (Angela) King of Howes, Clay King of Philip, and Jennifer (Dave) Schriever of Philip; nine grandchildren: Kevin (Marnie), Clancy, and Colter King, Kray (Boyd) Baker, Canyon and Journey King, and Casey, Wyatt, and Ashley Schriever; three great-grandchildren; one sister Marlene VanderPol of St. Cloud, Florida; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Rick was preceded in death by his infant son Richard Allen King; his parents; mother and father-in-law; an infant sister; and two brothers-in-law Doug VanderPol and Daniel Nachtigall.
Visitation will be held 5-7 p.m. on Monday, June 1, at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Philip, with a Christian Funeral Vigil Service at 7:00 p.m.
Christian Funeral Mass will be held 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, June 2, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church with Father Grant Gerlach officiating and Deacon Lloyd Frein assisting.
Christian Funeral Committal will follow at the Masonic Cemetery in Philip.
