Judd A. Lanfear

of Wall, South Dakota, died on Thursday, July 27, 2023
at the Hans P. Peterson Memorial Hospital in Philip at the age of 81

Judd A. Lanfear was born in Kalispell, Montana on June 30, 1943, the youngest of three boys to William and Alta (Shero) Lanfear. He grew up next door to his future bride and spent his childhood amongst his many future in-laws. He married Sharon (Burnside) on March 30, 1963, and the young couple bought a produce delivery business to manage while raising their first two children. Judd enlisted in the United States Army in 1960 and was deployed for two tours in Vietnam starting in 1967. Upon his return from the war in 1968, the family moved to Alaska for the next four years during which they welcomed their third child.

Judd served a dedicated military career until May 1987 when he retired as a First Sergeant. During his 28 years of service, he was awarded many commendations including, a National Defense Service Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal, an Army Command Medal 20LC, a Vietnam Campaign Medal, a Merit Service Medal, 2 Over Seas Service Bars, an Army Achievement Medal, a Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross, a Non-Commissioned Officer Professional Development level 3, an Army Service Ribbon, an Over Seas Service Ribbon, a Bronze Star Medal, a Drill Sergeant Identification Badge, a Gold Recognition Badge, 3 Sapphire Stars, and 6 Good Conduct Medals.

In 1985 Judd and Sharon bought the old Quinn Bar building which only had four walls and part of a roof. It soon was brought to life by Judd and Sharon and given the name, Two Bit Saloon and Steakhouse. In 1995, Judd started Prairie Schooner Wrecking and Towing with his youngest son, which they ran together for two years. Judd remained an active member of the Quinn community by serving on the Town Counsel and being especially dedicated to the Clean Up Quinn initiative. Judd was also a life member of the VFW. After retiring in 1999, Judd and Sharon sold their home in Quinn to move back to Kalispell, where Judd worked as a business accountant. He also played in a local band, became President of the Eagles Club, and was an active member of the Loyal Order of Moose. In 2021, Judd and Sharon decided to sell their home and return to South Dakota to be closer to their children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Upon moving to Wall, Judd brought together talented local musicians for regular “jam sessions” and spent time reconnecting with the Wall and Quinn communities.

Judd was known for his entrepreneurial spirit, unwavering ambition, his great love of family, especially his grandkids, and his notable skill as a musician. He enjoyed rebuilding the engine on his old 1964 truck, the sound of a smooth guitar, and any old clock on which he could tinker.

Judd is preceded in death by his parents and brothers, Orville and Marvin. He is survived by his wife, Sharon, their three children Mark Lanfear, Lorayna Papousek (Richard), and William “Bill” Lanfear (Darlene), grandchildren Evan, Rhiannon, Lissa, Savanna, Renatta, Marissa, and Drew, 3 step-grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, and 4 step-great-grandchildren.
