|
Bernice M. Miles was born June 13, 1922, on her parents’ homestead in Jackson County, southwest of Nowlin, South Dakota, the daughter of Arthur and Sylvia (Huisman) Miles. She received her education at the West Indian Creek School prior to graduating from Kadoka High School in 1941. As a young lady she worked on her parents' ranch and also worked in various restaurants. Later Bernice worked in the Kadoka School kitchen for several years.
Bernice was united in marriage to Louis Cvach on December 31, 1946 in Pierre, South Dakota. They made their home in Belvidere for ten years prior to moving into Kadoka where they resided for eighteen years. They then moved to their ranch twenty miles northeast of Kadoka. In September, 1988 Louie and Bernice moved to the Kadoka Care Center. They resided there until March 1991, when they moved into the Gateway Apartments in Kadoka until September 1994, when they moved back to the Kadoka Nursing Home.
After her husband’s death on January 5, 1997, Bernice continued to live at the Kadoka Nursing Home until her death.
Bernice was a member of the Kadoka Presbyterian Church where she was active in Ladies Aide, taught Sunday School and Bible School. She was a member of the PTA and Band Parents organization. Bernice was a leader of the Rustlers Roost 4-H club for several years. As an excellent seamstress, she tailored Louie's jackets and slacks, and suits for herself. She made countless western shirts, her daughters' wedding dresses, suits for her grandsons, dresses for her granddaughters, dolls, bears and quilts. Bernice enjoyed gardening, various crafts, taking photos, local history, genealogy and spending time with her family. She was an avid reader, and enjoyed bird watching.
Grateful for having shared her life include one son Larry Cvach and his wife Ann of Midland, two daughters Dorothy Overgaard and her husband Odell of Centerville, South Dakota, and Barbara Hockenbary and her husband James of Murdo, nine grandchildren, fourteen great-grandchildren, and a host of other relatives and friends.
