Raymond Knutson

at the Rapid City Regional Hospital in Rapid City at the age of 91

Raymond E. Knutson was born June 28, 1917 in Elk Point, South Dakota, the son of Edward and Rachel (Olson) Knutson. His early childhood was spent on the farm near Elk Point. He attended rural grade school in that community. In 1930 the family moved to his parents’ homestead in the Grindstone community northwest of Philip. He completed his education in that area.
As a young man he did various jobs including working as a farm hand, working on the railroad, and working for the WPA.
He was united in marriage to Delores Poste on April 4, 1942 in Philip, South Dakota. They made their home in Custer, where he and a partner owned a jewelry store. In the late 1950’s they moved back to the Grindstone and Ash Creek community, where they farmed and ranched. In the early 1960’s the family moved into Wall. While in Wall, Raymond worked for Cliff’s Service Station and Body Shop until becoming employed at Golden West Telephone Company. He worked for Golden West until his retirement.
His wife Delores preceded him in death on July 21, 1979.
Raymond continued to make his home in Wall where he pursued his hobby, making woodcarvings.
Raymond was a member of First Lutheran Church and was an usher for many years. He was also a member of the Wall Lions Club and the Sons of Norway.
Grateful for having shared his life are his son Arlin Knutson and his wife Rhonda of Spokane, Washington; three daughters Connie Knutson of Denver, Colorado, Marsa Walker of Wall, and Kim Morgan and her husband Jerry, of Wall; eight grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; a brother, Robert “Bob” Knutson of Rapid City; and a host of other relatives and friends.
