Glenn Hamm

of Wall, South Dakota, died on Friday, August 20, 2010
at the Rapid City Regional Hospital in Rapid City at the age of 87

Glenn Howard Hamm was born February 3, 1923, the oldest of four children born to Jay and Ellabud (Wallace) Hamm. He was born and raised in rural Pennington County, South Dakota. He attended Tableland rural school and graduated from Interior High School in 1941. He was a rural mail carrier and worked on various ranches before entering the United States Army in March of 1943.
He served with the 17th and 82nd Airborne Divisions in Europe, participating in the Battle of the Bulge, Operation “Varsity” and the occupation of Berlin. He was awarded the Bronze Star and the Purple Heart, and returned home to Interior in January 1946.
Glenn and Loy (Lytle) Hamm were married on May 20, 1950, and from this union three children were born: Patricia Bowman, Bill Hamm, and Delia Otto. He attended Black Hills State College, worked for the National Park Service for 11 years and the Postal Service for 14 years, retiring as the Postmaster of Quinn in 1992. His hobbies included woodworking, baseball, crossword puzzles, and most of all, children.
He was a member of both the VFW and the American Legion.
Survivors include his wife, Loy Hamm, Wall; a son, Bill Hamm and his wife Kathy, Olathe, Colorado; two daughters, Patricia Bowman and her husband Mike, Rapid City, and Delia Otto and her husband Bart, LaGrange, Wyo.; a sister, Viola Williams and her husband, Lyle, Wall; 16 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews. He was also survived by a “brother in arms,” Lou Rehak of Baltimore, MD.
Glenn was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Lee and Wayne, and a sister-in-law, Carol Ann.
Visitation was held 5-7 p.m. on Sunday, August 22, at the Rush Funeral Chapel in Wall.
Funeral services were held 10:00 a.m. Monday, August 23, at the Wall Community Center in Wall, with Pastor Harold Delbridge officiating.
Interment with military honors by the Sturgis Honor Guard was 1:30 p.m. Monday, at the Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis.
A memorial for the Honor Flight South Dakota has been established.  Memorials may be sent to Loy Hamm, P.O. Box 335, Wall, SD  57790.
