Edward Daum

of Murdo, South Dakota, died on Tuesday, October 12, 2010
at the Hans P. Peterson Memorial Hospital in Philip at the age of 85

Ed was born July 23, 1925, in rural Jones County to Nicholas and Elizabeth (Hoekman) Daum, the second of 11 children. He attended country school through eighth grade and lived within a half mile of his birthplace his entire life.
Ed married Evelyn Smith on July 2, 1952, in Platte. They made their home on the family farm west of Murdo. To this union was born four children, Elaine, Darrell, Gladys and Kenneth.
Ed was an active member of the Okaton Reformed Church (now the Okaton Evangelical Free Church) and Gideons International. He was an officer in the S.D. Wheatgrowers and a member of the National Wheatgrowers. He was a supervisor with the Jones County Soil Conservation District for more than 45 years.
In 1984 Ed and Evelyn began volunteering at Rio Grande Bible Institute in Edinburg, Texas. They continued to volunteer as winter workers for 22 years.
He enjoyed working with his hands and did many woodworking projects for his home and family.
Privileged to have shared his life are his wife, Evelyn; four children, Elaine (Harlin) Vermeer of Sergeant Bluff, Iowa, Darrell (Pamela) Daum of Murdo, Gladys (Sam) Heikes of Vermillion, and Kenneth (Jane) Daum of Murdo; eight grandchildren, Julie (Herb) Beaven, Brent (Stephanie) Vermeer, Heath Daum, Cherry (Dave) Carlson, Ashley Heikes, Heidi Heikes, Andy Daum and Joshua Daum; two step grandchildren, Eirik Heikes and Sunni (John) Knapton; six great–grandchildren and three step great–grandchildren. He is also survived by his sisters, Marie Murdoch of Oxford, Neb., Joanne (Bill) Shelton of Omaha, Neb., Betty (Bill) Sloas of Memphis, Tenn., and Katie Miller of Kansas City, Kan., and his brothers Nick (Pat) Daum of Dix, Neb., and Dick (Judy) Daum of Murdo.
Ed was preceded in death by his parents and four brothers, Nicky, Pete, Johnny and Sam.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Gideons International or Rio Grande Bible Institute.
Visitation was held 4-7 p.m. CDT on Friday, October 15, at the Community Bible Church in Murdo, with a prayer service at 7:00 p.m.
Funeral services were held 2:00 p.m. CDT Saturday, October 16, at the United Methodist Church in Murdo, with Pastor Gary McCubbin and Pastor Alvin Gwin officiating.
Interment was in the Murdo Cemetery.
