Claudette Jean “C.J.” Hoag, whose beautiful smile was always present to greet anyone she met, passed away Tuesday, June 14, 2011 at the age of 42 years, 10 months, and 9 days.
C.J. was born on August 5, 1968 in Kadoka, South Dakota, the daughter of Claude Freeman and Patricia (Schofield) Freeman. She grew up in Midland, South Dakota, until the age of 3, when the family moved to Nelligan, Germany until 1973. In 1974, they moved to Ft. Carson, Colorado was where she started school. Philip, South Dakota became her permanent home in 1979.
On July 4, 1990 C.J. was united in marriage to Fred Hoag in Philip and to this union was born one son, Erick Griffin Hoag. Her love of gardening produced an abundance of vegetables which she enjoyed sharing with family members and the community. She enjoyed cooking and baking and created many delicious meals, and often shared it with family. The love of her pets over the years provided her with unconditional love and was a great enjoyment in her life. She was always willing to lend a helping hand. Her hard working nature and willingness to help others was ever present. The greatest gift of all was her ability to care and love deeply, her contagious laughter and unique sense of humor. This will always be remembered by those who were close to her.
Claudette is survived by her parents Claude Freeman of Kadoka, and Patricia (Schofield) Freeman of Philip; one son Erick Griffin Hoag of Philip, two step-sons Joshua (Becky) Hoag and Jeremy (Kayla) Hoag of Aberdeen, SD; five step-grandchildren Morgan, Ethan, Braden, Adalynn, and Sydney; paternal grandparents, Glenn and Lucy Freeman of Kadoka; two sisters Jolene (Bill) Marshall of Mountain Home, ID and Rebecca Freeman of Philip; three nephews Brett, Dillon and Dalton and one niece Hannah.

We walk the path we're given___
And go where we are led,
Sometimes the way has only stones,
And sorrow lies ahead.
But God is walking with you,
Across the rocky way.
He'll bring you through to sunshine,
And a peacefilled brighter day.
Our prayers are with you!

I'm so sorry for your loss. I got to know CJ a couple of years ago and I will never forget her! She fought a hard battle with her "cunning, baffling and powerful" disease because of her love for her family and wanted nothing more than to make a difference in the world. I hope she knows what a difference she made in mine!

I had not seen C.J. for many years, but i am sorry to hear of her passing. She remembered us at in recent years during the holidays. I will remember her as a happy person with a bright smile. It is sad that people are not cherished while they are with us. People do seem to get much more interested in others when they pass on. Sadly, this family is badly fragmented. Perhaps this event will make at least some of us realize just how precious life is. My prayers are with C.J. I hope now she is at peace.

Dear Claude & Patricia: I am so sorry for your loss; no parent should have to bury his/her child. While I didn't know your daughter at all, I do know Claude from MHS (Class of '69) and Patricia from Schofield/Fosheim family ties. I pray you have many wonderful memories of Claudette and that those memories will help to heal over time. May God be especially close to you at this time, and always. Beryl (Addison) Geer
