Dorothy Porch

of Kadoka, South Dakota, died on Sunday, February 5, 2006
at the Hans P. Peterson Memorial Hospital in Philip at the age of 90

Dorothy E. Hockenbary was born March 3, 1915, at Cambridge, Nebraska, the fifth of ten children born to Elmer and Emma (Spath) Hockenbary. At the age of three she moved with her family to Keyapaha, a community in Tripp County, where she began her schooling. She later graduated from the eighth grade at Valentine, Nebraska. The family then moved to the Royal Serby place, located halfway between Long Valley and Wanblee. Dorothy attended school in Wanblee, graduating from Wanblee High School in 1933.

Dorothy was united in marriage to Cyrus Porch on July 3, 1933, and to this union were born five children, Stanley, Boyd, Carol, Ralph, and Roger. They made their home in the Wanblee area all their married life.

In 1977, her husband Cy preceded her in death. Dorothy continued to reside in the Wanblee area until moving into Kadoka in 1995. While in Kadoka, Dorothy was a member of the Presbyterian Church, where she was active in Sunday school. Dorothy was also a fifty-year member of Eastern Star, a member of Naomi Circle, a quilting group, and enjoyed her coffee time twice a day.

In the fall of 2004, Dorothy moved into the Silverleaf Assisted Living Center in Philip, where she has since resided.

Dorothy was a great supporter of Rodeo Bible Camp, and presented the Cyrus Porch Memorial Bible to many young adults for over twenty-six years.

Dorothy enjoyed spending time with her family and friends.

Dorothy was a wonderful lady with such values that have been passed down through many generations!! I remember spending lots of time at the ranch while in school...so many fond memories!
We are honored to be friends with such a wonderful family. The days may be tough now, but along with the tears, let there be joy and lots of smiles for the memories of Grandma Dorothy and all that she taught us by just being a part of her life!
We love you

I wanted so much to be with all of you today. I can not even begin to think how to explain how much she has meant to me my entire life. Through Dorothy, I always felt connected to my Grandma and even so, I never felt like she was a substitute but she has an extra special place in my heart and memories. She was always there to care for Kyle and me when Mom needed her to and always wanted to visit us after we were grown. I know she is happy to be in Heaven but I will never forget her place on earth in the house in the country. Love to all. Lauri

Webster could have saved much space in the dictionary for his definition of lady if he would have just put simply "Dorothy Porch". I am proud to have counted Dorothy as a neighbor and friend. She did indeed put up with a lot of Bear Creek rascals and we loved her for it. We'll miss her.

I recall one of my stays at the Porch Ranch with Ralph as a youngster in the early 50's. We were always Tom Sawyer & Huck Finn down by the creek. Noise was coming from under the barn & I volunteered to crawl into the crawlspace underneath the barn to spook whatever it was...a skunk sprayed me head to toe. Dorothy had to scrub me down, wash my clothes outside in the tank & hang them outside overnight. She finally decided to burn them & I borrowed clothes from Ralph's wardrobe. I'm sure she considered leaving me outside too, for causing such a 'stink', but instead, she made sure I was ok, comfortable & well fed....later in our school years, she hosted dance parties in the basement of her Kadoka home for us. She was always looking for ways to provide wholesome activities for her family & their friends, and she was a wonderful influence on those fortunate to have known her....I am sure Cy was happy to see her smiling face as she entered thru Heaven's Gates to join him. God Bless.!
