Bernice Weigandt

of Murdo, South Dakota, died on Tuesday, April 19, 2005
at her home in Murdo at the age of 83

Bernice Viola Weigandt was born June 22, 1921 to Ira and Hilda (Kulbel) Trego in Winner, SD. She was baptized in the Presbyterian Church and in 1959 was confirmed into the Lutheran faith. She grew up in the Winner area and graduated from the Winner High School. After attending the Mitchell College of Business, she was employed by the Social Security Administration office in Murdo for several years.

On May 23rd, 1942 in Winner, South Dakota, she married Leonard Weigandt and to this union five children were born, Keith, Larry, Carol, Karen and Kevin.

After buying the Weigandt homestead in 1966, Bernice worked side by side with her husband on the farm until Leonard’s death in 1991. She was also very active in the VFW Auxiliary , Lutheran Ladies Aid, and Band Boosters. Reading books, playing cards, crosswords and family gatherings were her favorite pastimes. She also enjoyed going to her grandchildren’s activities.

She is survived by three sons, Keith Weigandt and his wife Julie of Sioux City, Iowa, Larry Weigandt and his wife Dorothy of Mitchell, South Dakota, and Kevin Weigandt of Rapid City; two daughters, Carol Gross and her husband LeRoy, Jr. of Murdo, and Karen Royer and her husband Bruce of Murdo; thirteen grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; one brother Eugene Trego and wife Pat of Summerville, South Carolina; one sister-in-law Donna Trego of Winner, South Dakota; one brother-in-law Arthur Weigandt of Edgemont; and many relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Leonard, on March 26, 1991, her parents and one brother.

She will be deeply missed by everyone and her memory will live on in the hearts of those that knew and loved her.

Visitation was Thursday, April 21st, from 5:00-7:00 p.m. CDT at the Messiah Lutheran Church in Murdo.

Funeral services were held Friday, April 22, 2005, at 10:00 AM CDT at the Messiah Lutheran Church in Murdo with Pastor David Brinkmeyer officiating.

Interment was at the Murdo Cemetery.
