"The Bluebells"

When the soft mild days are returning.
And the birds begin to cheer
For the sunny warm spring wealth
And the cloudless days so dear,

Then my blood begins to boil,
And I long to bend my tracks,
For dear old South Dakota
When the bluebells are coming back.

You can have your hothouse flowers,
In their artificial rows;
And the long shadowy green house,
Where those hothouse darlings grow,

But let me have the sunshine, and
Just let me bend my tracks
Toward the state of South Dakota,
When the bluebells all come back.

O, There’s something about that flower,
Raises a lump up in my breast;
They’re so tender, sweet and fragrant,
It makes me think of the last long rest;

When I have received the summons
And know that I must die,
I want no hothouse flowers,
Put bluebells where I lie.
