Philip G. "Phil" Logan

of Philip, South Dakota, died on Monday, November 27, 2000
at the Rapid City Regional Hospital in Rapid City at the age of 77

Philip George Logan was born April 3, 1923, near Wendt, South Dakota, the son of George and Lenore (Stelow) Logan.  He spent his first four years in the Wendt community and then moved with the family to Bear Butte, South Dakota, and later to Volunteer, South Dakota, before moving to a ranch north of Wall, South Dakota, in October of 1931.  He grew up on the ranch and graduated from Wall High School in 1942.

After graduation he moved to Lamora, WA, where he worked in the shipyards as a welder on ships used for World War II.  After the war he returned to the Wall area where he worked for various ranchers as a cowboy.  Philip loved horses.

He was united in marriage to Gailya Denke on June 3, 1951, at St. Paul Lutheran Church, located 14 miles north of Quinn, South Dakota.

He continued to ranch in the Cottonwood, Kadoka, Belvidere, Wasta and Howes area until moving to Philip in the fall of 1958.  He worked on road construction throughtout the state of South Dakota until 1974 when he began working at the Hans P. Peterson Memorial Hospital in Philip.  He retired from the hospital work in 1993 due to heart problems.

Philip never knew a stranger, greeted everyone with a smile, welcomed family, friends or anyone in need into his home and his life.  He served the Lord faithfully, and shared his faith and love openly.  He loved to dance and work on cars.  He had a great sense of humor and his friends numbered in the hundreds.

His family was his genuine job; he was loved by his grandchildren and will be remembered by all.

Grateful for having shared his life are his wife, Gailya "Gay" logan of Philip; a son, Russell Logan of Interior; a daughter, Tammy Logan of Sioux Falls; nine grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; one sister, Ramona Buchholz of Philip; two step-brothers, Cecil Gartner of Philip and Clifford Gartner of Kadoka; one step-sister, Evelyn Henricksen of Watertown; a sister-in-law, Neva Jean Logan of San Luis Obispo, California; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by three infant children, Debra, Roxie and Wesley; his parents; one brother, Richard Logan; his step-mother, Collene Logan; and three step-brothers, Francis, Herbert and Harold Gartner.

A memorial is established.
