Marilyn J. Rootof Kadoka, South Dakota, died on Sunday, February 28, 1999

Marilyn Joyce Patterson was born June 29, 1930, on her parents' farm near Page City, Kansas, the daughter of BIrd J. and Nellie Marie (Letellier) Patterson.
She started her education in Appleton, Colorado. Later the family moved to Arkansas where she continued her education. In 1939, the family moved to a farm south of Norris, South Dakota. Marilyn graduated from Kadoka High School in 1948. She then attended Dakota Wesleyan College in Mitchell where she obtained her nursing degree in 1955 through the Methodist Hospital.
Marilyn was united in marriage to Russell Seidler on March 10, 1950, at Kadoka, and to this union was born a son, Edward James Seidler.
They made their home on a ranch south of Kadoka and Marilyn worked as a nurse in Philip.
In the mid 1950's, the family moved to Delta Junction, Alaska, where they homesteaded. After her husband's death on September 1, 1961, Marilyn and Edward moved back to the Kadoka area.
While in Kadoka she continued with her nursing profession in the Kadoka area. Marilyn was united in marriage to James "Jim" Root on December 6, 1964, at Kadoka.
They made their home in Denver, Colorado, for six months before returning to the Kadoka area, where they have since resided.
Marilyn continued to do nursing in Philip until 1971, at which time they owned and operated the Badlands Court Motel and Campground. Marilyn also worked as a nurse in the Kadoka area while they ran the motel. In 1981, they sold the motel and campground and Marilyn returned to the Philip Health Services, where she worked until retiring in 1995.
Marilyn attended the Presbyterian Church in Kadoka. She was an avid gardener and enjoyed canning her produce as well as raising beuatiful flowers. She and Jim traveled a lot throughout their married life, seeing many places of interest and several different countries.
Grateful for having shared her life are her husband, Jim Root of Kadoka; a son, Edward James Seidler of Phoenix, Arizona; her father, Bird J. Patterson of Kadoka; two brothers, Gene Patterson and his wife, Maxine, of Rapid City, and Jerry Patterson and his wife, Joan, of Kadoka; a sister at heart, JoAnn Letellier and her husband, Gale, of Belvidere; and a host of other relatives and friends.
In addition to her first husband, Russell Seidler, she was preceded in death by her mother, Nellie M. Patterson, on August 29, 1995.
A memorial has been established.
