Marian Persons-Shumway

of Fresno, California, formerly of Philip, South Dakota, died on Friday, August 4, 2000
at the Beverly Manor Convalescent Home in Fresno, California at the age of 89

Marian T. VanCleave was born December 20, 1910, on her uncle's farm, in Jackson County south of Philip, South Dakota, the daughter of John L. and Nellie (Gale) VanCleave.

She grew up in this area and received her education in Nowlin, South Dakota.  Marian was united in marriage to Raymond L. Persons in 1926 and to this union was born six children.

They made their home on a farm-ranch west of Philip, South Dakota, most of their married life.

After her husband's death on July 31, 1958, she continued to live on the farm-ranch for a short time before moving to Chadron, Nebraska.  While in Chadron, she met and later married, Rolland Shumway.  They made their home on a farm near Chadron, which they continued to operate until moving into Chadron.

After her husband, Rolland's death, she moved to Hot Springs, South Dakota, where she did volunteer work at the V.A. Hospital.

Later Marian moved to Fresno, California, where she made her home near her two sons, Leroy and Gale Persons.  While in Fresno, she was an active member of the Fresno Gem and Mineral Society, where she sewed many thousands of bags for polished rocks to be sold at the Fresno County Fair.  She also made many lap robes and bibs for convalescent homes in the Fresno community.

Grateful for having shared her life are her three sons, Leroy A. Persons of Fresno, California; Clyde O. Persons of Banner Elk, North Carolina; Gale Persons of Fresno, California; 9 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; 4 great-great grandchildren; 2 stepchildren, Joe Shumway of Mitchell, Nebraska, and Betty Shafer of Ringling, Oklahoma; 5 step-grandchildren; and several step-great grandchildren.

In addition to her first husband, Raymond and her second husband, Rolland, she was preceded in death by three children, Letha A. Hanson, Virgil Persons, and Geraldine Persons.

At her request, the family requested no flowers.
