Mathilda M. Campbellof Wall, South Dakota, died on Sunday, June 1, 1997

Mathilda Martha Harnisch was born March 19, 1918, at Clayton, South Dakota, the daughter of William and Emma (Werning) Harnisch. The family moved to a farm north of Wall in 1929. Her education was received at Werning School near Clayton and the Lake Hill School near Wall.
Mathilda was baptized at Clayton and confirmed at St. Peter's Lutheran Church near Quinn. She has been a member of First Lutheran Church of Wall since its inception 50 years ago.
She was united in marriage to LeRoy Campbell on September 12, 1939, at Rapid City.
They farmed north of Wall until 1962 when they moved into town and she continued her motel employment with the Estes family. She retired in August of 1996 after 35 years.
Mathilda was a charter member of the Lutheran Women's Missionary League and Ladies Aid Society and held many executive offices. She served on the First Lutheran Altar Guild, enjoyed making baptismal clothes for many years, organized after church coffee hour, and attended the Adult Bible Study. She was a member of the Live 'N Learn Club, the North Club, the Birthday Club, the Neighborhood Card Club, the First Lutheran Quilters, the Tuesday Afternoon Bowling League, and was involved in the Elderly Meals program.
Thankful for having shared her life are her three loving daughters, Claramae White, Marjorie Paulsen and her husband, Al, and Beverly Dartt and her husband, Dan, all of Wall; eight grandchildren: Kevin White of Mesa, Arizona; Kyle White of San Diego, California; Kelly White of Reston, Virginia; Tamara Manson and her husband, David, of Hesperia, California; Tim Van Vleck and his wife, Gayle, of Victorville, California; Troy Van Vleck of Hayword, California; Daryl Dartt and his wife, Susan, of Wall; and Denise Dartt and her fiance, Dan Baldwin, of Brookings, South Dakota; five step-grandchildren; six great-grandchildren: Holly, Kelly, and Michael Manson, Curtis Van Vleck, Rawlley and Duston Dartt; Lisa Paulsen and six other step-great-grandchildren; a very special sister and brother-in-law, Margaret and John Buckles, who lived and worked with her for 13 summers; two brothers, Melvin Harnisch and Lenard Harnisch; five other sisters, Wilma Harnisch, Esther Hoefs, Helen Slovek, Alice Clair, and Mildred Harnisch; and a host of other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband, LeRoy Campbell, in January of 1969; and her parents.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established in her memory to the Wall Clinic or the First Lutheran Church.
