Bessie Lee Stewart

of Idaho Falls, Idaho, formerly of Kadoka, South Dakota, died on Sunday, January 12, 1997
at the Eastern Idaho Regional Hospital in Idaho Falls, Idaho at the age of 82

Bessie Lee Getz, daughter of Joe and Henrietta (VanDerhoef) Getz, was born November 4, 1914, in Beaver County, Oklahoma.  She attended school at Plainview School along with her sister, Alnora, and five brothers, Bill, Pat, Mike, Lee, and Tad.  They were true pioneers, first living in a dugout and later a large home was built by a great-uncle, Lew Miller, which is still a lovely home north of Booker, Texas.

Bessie married Ernest Stewart on July 5, 1933, and they were wheat farmers in Beaver Co. until the summer of 1953 when they moved to Western South Dakota.  They made their home in the Cottonwood, Kadoka, Murdo, and White River communities until 1977 when she and Ernest moved back to the Kadoka community.

She and her husband worked together on a thriving upholstery business and were well known for the beautiful work they did.  Bessie blessed her family and many friends with her sewing talents through the years, with many shirts, dresses, and the beautiful needlepoint handiwork she did.

Bessie lived her last two years in the Idaho Falls, Idaho, area with her last residence being in The Life Care Center, Idaho Falls.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Ernest, in 1977; two grandsons, Brent William Hunter and Vincent Thomas Stewart; her parents, her sister, and four brothers.

Bessie is survived by one son, Dugan Stewart and his wife, Charmaine, of Philip, South Dakota; two daughters, Patricia Meller and her husband, Harold, of Wichita, Kansas, and Dorothy Hunter and her husband, Bill, of Firth, Idaho; 15 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren.  She is also survived by her brother, Tad Getz and his wife, Gertrude, of Onalaska, Texas; a brother-in-law, Dan Sell of Booker, Texas, as well as a host of other relatives and friends.

A memorial has been established.
