John Calvin "Cal" Hoag

of Philip, South Dakota, died on Wednesday, December 4, 1996
at his home in Philip at the age of 71

John Calvin Hoag, better known as "Cal" to his family and friends, was born May 9, 1925, at Bridger, South Dakota, to Harry Herbert and Sadie Marietta (Britton) Hoag.

In 1927 the family moved into Philip where Cal grew up, attended grade school and graduated from Philip High School.

In 1945 he entered the U.S. Army where he served during World War II.  After his discharge he returend to Philip where he worked at the Philip Lumber Company, which was a family business.

He was united in marriage to Maxine Griffin on February 26, 1950, at Philip, South Dakota.

They made their home in Philip where Cal continued to work with his parents and brother, Homer, in the family business.  After the family sold the lumber company, Cal worked with his brother in the redi-mix and trucking business.  Later, both Cal and Homer worked for Little Scotchman Industries as sales representatives and also hauled material to and from the factory.

Cal also owned and operated the Fireside Motel in Philip for two years.  He then became an independent trucker, hauling local and long distance.  He also worked for West Central Industries in Philip, a position he continued until the time of his death.

Cal was a member of the United Church and the Wheeler-Brooks American Legion Post #73, both of Philip.

Grateful for having shared his life are his daughter, Merle Ann Elshere of Rapid City; a son, Fred Hoag and his wife, Claudette, of Philip; seven grandchildren: Laurie Sever of Rapid City; Julie Moore of Winner; Jennifer Kennedy of Sussex, New Jersey; Steven Elshere of Shirley, Illinois; Joshua and Jeremy Hoag, both of Draper; and Erick Hoag of Philip; seven great-grandchildren; a sister, Marion Nelson and her husband, Jim, of Philip; a special friend, Ella Hart of Philip, and her family; Linda Kuckenbecker, Pam Ingram, Steve Hart, Tom Hart, Cindy O'Connell and Susan Heinz; several nieces and nephews; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Cal was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Homer Hoag.

A memorial is established.
