Margaret Hedeen

of Kadoka, South Dakota, died on Wednesday, August 28, 1996
at the Hans P. Peterson Memorial Hospital in Philip at the age of 86

Margaret Hedeen was born January 6, 1910, the daughter of Niels P. and Laura Nielsen.  She passed away at the hospital in Philip, following a month-long illness, having suffered a fractured hip.

Margaret grew up and graduated high school in Kadoka.

She was united in marriage to Roy Hedeen and to this union four daughters were born: Dolores, Viola, Barbara, and Ethel.

Margaret spent her entire life in Kadoka.  She worked as a cook for the school lunch program, was a nurse at the hospital, owned and operated a cafe, and the last 25 years before her retirement was a nurse at the clinic owned by Dr. Sundet.  Margaret was also an excellent seamstress and enjoyed sewing for her children and grandchildren.

Margaret was an active member of the American Legion Auxiliary, the Royal Neighbors of America, and has been a member of the First Presbyterian Church since 1927.  Her great love in life was sports and she attended as many of the high school events as she could and was making plans for the new school year.  She was thrilled to attend sports events for her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Besides her parents and husband, Margaret was preceded in death by her brothers: Ervin, Pete, and Niels, Jr.; two sisters: Anna Birkholz and Olive Luneburg; two daughters, Dolores Smith and Ethel Anderson; one grandchild, Peggy Stone; one great-grandchild, Todd Prichard.

She is survived by two daughters and their husbands, Viola and Russ Olney, and Barbara and Gene Stone of Kadoka; one sister, Laura Allen of Kadoka; 13 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; one special nephew and his wife, Bill and Sally Birkholz, and their two children, Jill and Tom, of Redfield; as well as several other nieces and nephews, all who were important in her life.

A memorial to the sports complex has been established, as this was her special request four years ago.
