John H. Sherburne was born October 26, 1915, in Tripp County, near Winner, South Dakota, to Andrew J. and Christina (Weisenburger) Sherburne.
In September 1924, at the age of eight, he moved with his parents by team and wagon to the Wanblee area. He grew up there and graduated from Wanblee High School and later graduated with a B.A. degree from Yankton College.
John taught school at Lakeview in Todd County for two years and then taught at Howard, South Dakota. While in Howard he met his future wife, Doris Elliott.
John served in the U.S. Army during World War II. While stationed in Wichita Falls, Texas, he was united in marriage to Doris Elliott on July 12, 1944.
They made their home at Camp Livingston, Louisiana, Fort Snelling, Minnesota, and Camp McCoy, Wisconsin, prior to his discharge on February 2, 1946.
They made their home in Belvidere, where he worked for E.W. Reeves Insurance Company. After his mother died in 1947, John and Doris helped his father with the operation of the family farm located one mile east of Wanble. They took over the family farm after his dad retired. In 1982 they semi-retired and moved into Kadoka, but John continued to return back to work on the family farm.
He was a member of the Kadoka Presbyterian Church, the American Legion Post #27, the Badlands Lions Club, Mt. Moriah Masonic Lodge #155 A.F. & A.M., and the Order of the Eastern Star, all of Kadoka.
