Loyd P. VanderMayof Long Valley, South Dakota, died on Wednesday, December 15, 1993
|
Loyd P. VanderMay was born October 27, 1920, at Mitchell, South Dakota, to Leo and Katherine (Crampton) VanderMay.
At the age of three, he moved with his parents to their Washabaugh County homestead. He grew up on the homestead and received his elementary education at the Plainview Rural School prior to graduating from the Wanblee Public High School in 1938.
As a young man he worked with his parents on the ranch-farm until 1948 when he moved to Plainview, Nebraska, where he worked at the Ford Garage until the winter of 1949, when he returned to the family homestead.
He was united in marriage to Elizabeth "Betty" Nemec on July 1, 1950, at Midland, South Dakota. They made their home on the ranch-farm, which they have continued to operate all their married life.
After Loyd semi-retired, he pursued a wood working hobby, using natural wood from the Badlands to make clocks, lamps, and glass top tables that he gave to his family and friends.
Loyd was a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church of Norris and served on the Washabaugh and later Jackson County school board for 16 years.
Grateful for having shared his life are his wife, Betty VanderMay of Longvalley; five sons: Charles VanderMay of Kadoka; John VanderMay of Imperial, California; Pat VanderMay of Norris; Dan VanderMay and Steve VanderMay, both of Longvalley; seven daughters: Kay Philllips of Spearfish; Mary Setera of Miles City, Montana; Marge Donovan of Vetal; Angela Bertalot of Gillette, Wyoming; Suxanne VanderMay of Longvalley; Janice VanderMay of Spearfish; and Joan Buchman of Baumholder, Germany; 36 grandchildren; two brothers, Harry VanderMay and Francis VanderMay, both of Longvalley; one sister, Irene Zickrick of Longvalley; and a host of other relatives and friends.
