Byron D. Bradfield

of Kadoka, South Dakota, died on Friday, August 9, 1991
at the Hans P. Peterson Memorial Hospital in Philip at the age of 82

Byron D. Bradfield was born October 23, 1908, on a ranch south of Quinn, South Dakota, to William R. and Ruby L. (Gage) Bradfield.

He grew up in that area where he attended rural elementary school, then attending two years at Quinn High School prior to graduating from Rapid City High School.

He was united in marriage to Dorothy McFarland on December 5, 1932, at Philip, South Dakota.

They homesteaded their ranch west of Cactus Flatt which they operated until 1944 when they established the Flying U Ranch nine miles southwest of Kadoka.  They operated and continued to live on the ranch until September 1987 when they moved into Kadoka.  Because of health reasons, Byron moved into the Philip Nursing Home in October of 1990.

Byron was a member of the Presbyterian Church of Kadoka and had served many years for the Jackson County Soil Conservation District, directory of the White River Grazing Association, and had served as Jackson County Commissioner.

His hobbies included writing historical articles for the many magazines and papers including the "Western Horseman", "Buffalo Magazine", the "Dakota Farmer", "South Dakota Heritage", and "Hall of Fame Magazine", as well as a column called the "White River Pete Sez" for the "South Dakota Stockgrower's Magazine".  Later he compiled his stories into a book called "White River Pete Sez".

Grateful for having shared his life are his wife, Dorothy Bradfield, of Kadoka; one son, Dale Bradfield of Rapid City; four daughters, Ruby (Mrs. Bob) Motes of Rapid City, Pat (Mrs. Dave) Valandry of Kadoka, Joy (Mrs. Jerry) Neville of Milesville, South Dakota, and Connie (Mrs. Gerald) Holst of Rochester, Minnesota; 11 grandchildren; 6 great-grandchildren; one brother, L.G. "Brad" Bradfield of Hill City, South Dakota; and a host of other relatives and friends.
