Jacqueline A. Smoot, better known as "Jackie" to her family and friends, was born July 1, 1926, at Pillsbury, North Dakota, to Elbert and Vivian (Schoeppach) Smoot.

At the age of one, she moved with her parents to Buffalo Gap, South Dakota, where they resided for two years prior to moving to Rapid City, and then to Belle Fourche, before moving to Wall, South Dakota, in 1931.

She grew up in Wall and received her education in the Wall Public School prior to graduating from the Wall High School in 1944.  She attended Spearfish Normal where she obtained her teaching certificate.  Jackie taught elementary education in Wall and in rural schools in the Wall area.

She was united in marriage to Delbert Paulsen on April 20, 1947, at Rapid City, South Dakota.  They farmed and ranched all their married life northwest of Wall.

In the early 1960s Jackie graduated from Black Hills State Teachers College in Spearfish with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Elementary Education.  She continued her teaching career in Wall and the surrounding area until retiring in 1974.

They continued to make their home on their farm-ranch.

Jackie was a member of the Wall Methodist Church, the Live and Learn Club, and the Badlands Alumni Association.  She was a recipient of the Good Neighbor Award presented to her by the Catalyst Club at the Good Neighbor Banquet held in April 1989 in Wall.
