Grace Doud

of Midland, South Dakota, died on Saturday, November 10, 1990
at the Missouri Valley Nursing Center in Pierre at the age of 89

Grace Whisler was born August 7, 1901, in Butte County, Nebraska, to Eugene and Irene (Powell) Whisler.  She was the oldest of ten children.

In 1906 she moved with her family by covered wagon to the Midland vicinity.  She grew up there and attended grade school at the Phoeba Rural School in Saddle Butte Township, northeast of Midland, prior to graduating from Midland High School in 1922.  She then taught school for three years south of Midland.

She was united in marriage to Ralph Doud on May 28, 1925, in Ft. Pierre, South Dakota, and to this union were born three sons and four daughters.

They lived in Midland until 1950 when they moved to a farm thirteen miles north of Midland, which was one mile north of her parents' homestead.

Because of Ralph's health, they moved into Midland in 1977, and in 1978 they moved onto their son, Richard and his wife's farm.  After Ralph's death on January 8, 1978, Grace continued to live at Richard's until 1982 when she moved to Eugene, Oregon, to be near her daughters.

Due to health reasons, Grace moved into the Parkwood Apartments in Pierre, South Dakota, five months ago, and then into the Missouri Valley Nursing Center three weeks ago.

She was a member of the Open Bible Church in Midland and was very active in the church and with her family.

Grateful for having shared her life are her three sons, Ralph Doud Jr. and his wife, Doris, of Elizabeth, Colorado, Edward Doud and his wife, Dorothy, of Ft. Pierre, South Dakota, and Richard Doud and his wife, Celia, of Midland; three daughters, Irene (Mrs. Ed) Stelting of Noti, Oregon, Natalie (Mrs. Dick) Schied of Cody, Nebraska, and Grace Woods of Lynnwood, Washington; 19 grandchildren; 40 great-grandchildren; 1 great-great-granddaughter; two brothers, Lisla Whisler of Mt. Lake, Minnesota, and Oren Whisler of Midland; five sisters, Mary, Goldie and Dorothy Whisler, all of Midland, Hazel Gorseth of Eugene, Oregon, and Essie McKean of Vista, California; and a host of other relatives and friends.

In addition to her husband, Ralph, she was preceded in death by one daughter, Koral; four grandchildren; two great-grandsons; her parents; and two brothers, Glen and Lee Whisler.
