Eunice C. Nelson was born October 4, 1919, on her parents' homestead in the South Creek area, notheast of Kadoka, to Albert and Josephine (Duba) Nelson.
She grew up there and attended South Creek rural school prior to graduating from Kadoka High School in 1936.
In 1938 she graduated from Chillicothe Business College in Chillicothe, Missouri, as a secretary.
She worked as a private secretary for the State Board of Health in Kadoka from July 1, 1938, when the office closed and she was transferred to Pierre in the same capacity, until the fall of 1941. She then worked for a stenographic pool for the Federal Power Commission in Washington, D.C. and Fort Worth, Texas until 1942 when she worked as a private secretary for the Civil Aeronautics Administration in Fort Worth, Texas, until returing to Kadoka in the spring of 1944.
From 1944 until 1946 she did general office work for the AAA office in Kadoka and then did secretarial work for attorney H.P. Gilchrist from 1946 until 1953.
She was united in marriage to Russell R. Hicks on December 15, 1950, at Rapid City, South Dakota. They purchased and operated a farm-ranch northeast of Kadoka all their married life.
After her sons were in school, she began working for attorney Donald L. Heck as a secretary from 1967 until December 1974.
In September 1976 to June 1977 she worked as Deputy Clerk of Courts in Jackson County, and then served as Clerk of Courts and Magistrate in Jackson County from June 13, 1977, until reitring on December 26, 1986.
Eunice was a member of the Presbyterian Church in Kadoka and was a member of the Tri-County 4-H Leaders Association for over 20 years.
Surivors include her husband, Russell, of Kadoka; three sons, Newton of Utica, South Dakota, Joe of Midland, South Dakota, and Ted of Kadoka; two grandsons, Nathaniel and Matthew Hicks, both of Utica, South Dakota; three sisters, Ethel Woodruff and Myrtle Nelson, both of Kadoka, and Alice Regan of Layton, Utah; and a host of other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents and one brother, Merlin Nelson.
