Lulu A. Uhlir

of Kadoka, South Dakota, died on Tuesday, September 22, 1987
at the Rapid City Regional Hospital in Rapid City at the age of 81

Lulu A. Mills, daughter of Ora and Anise (Gatschel) Mills was born October 27, 1905, in Winterset, Iowa.  In 1906 she came with her parents by railroad from Winterset to Murdo, South Dakota, where the railroad stopped.  Her father became very ill and died in Murdo.  Her mother and the four children preceded on to Kadoka and then on to the Weta area where they homesteaded.

Lulu grew up in the Weta area and graduated from Weta High School.  She attended college in Yankton, South Dakota, and later graduated from Black Hills State Teachers College.

Lulu taught school for thirty years in the Midwest, of which the last few years were at Kadoka, Ellsworth AFB, Manderson, and the Wanblee Day School before retiring.

Lulu was united in marriage to Clarence F. Uhlir on August 9, 1927, at Philip, South Dakota.

Clarence preceded her in death on November 8, 1970.

She continued to make her home in Kadoka and on March 18, 1985, she moved into the Kadoka Care Center.

Lulu was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, the National Retired Teachers Association, and the Eastern Star.

Grateful for having shared her life are her two sons, Stan and Clarence Uhlir, both of Kadoka; nine grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; her step-father, Charles Davis; a brother, Harvey Mills; and two sisters, Bernice Butts and Mildred Whaley.
