June J. Sharp was born June 5, 1914, near Conata, South Dakota, to Clyde and Wilma (Jacobs) Sharp. She was the oldest of seventeen children.
She grew up in the Conata area and graduated from Wall High School.
All of her life she was the oldest sister and surrogate mother to her younger brothers and sisters. Besides her two sons, she raised two nephews and one niece.
She was united in marriage to James M. Mendenhall on March 13, 1935, in Rapid City, South Dakota. They farmed and ranched from 1935 until 1978 in the Interior, South Dakota, area.
From 1935 to 1945, they did road construction work in seventeen states. In 1945, they purchased their Interior home and continued to farm-ranch until retiring in 1978.
Her husband, James, preceded her in death on June 4, 1983, and she then continued to live in Interior.
June was a member of the Presbyterian Church, the Current Events Club, and the Senior Citizens Center, all of Interior.
Survivors include two sons, Victor of Interior, and James of Sioux City, Iowa; two nephews she raised, LeRoy McIlravy of Gillette, Wyoming, and Marvin McIlravy of Nashville, Tennessee; a niece she raised, Wilma (Mrs. Don) Schone of Riverton, Wyoming; 14 grandchildren; 4 great-grandchildren; seven brothers, William, Willard, and Ben Sharp, all of Interior; Ambrose and Robert Sharp, both of Rapid City, Clyde Sharp of Gillette, Wyoming, and Claude Sharpe of Fairbanks, Alaska; four sisters, Celeste Teal and Donna (Mrs. Frank) Bounds, both of Rapid City, Goldie (Mrs. Lloyd) Fischer of Mobridge, South Dakota, and Rose (Mrs. Paul) Bonvillian of Destrahand, Louisiana.
In addition to her husband, James, she was preceded in death by five brothers, Tom, Wilson, Calvin, Russell, and Albert Sharp.
