Edith Mary Harrison was born on January 11, 1907, in the Emmet community in Union County to H.H. and Julia Ann (Gehan) Harrison.
She was educated in Emmet and graduated from Beresford High School in 1923. She attended the University of South Dakota and Black Hills State College to meet certification for a teaching career.
She first taught rural school in the Ottumwa area from 1932 to 1939 then in the Midland area and in Midland for several years.
She was united in marriage to Thomas E. Gillaspie on June 1, 1937, at Ottumwa. They lived in that area for two years before moving into Midland then to Hill City in 1984.
Edith was a member of St. William's Catholic Church of Midland.
Survivors include her husband, Thomas, of Hill City; two sons, John of Hill City, and Michael of Spearfish; two daughters, Mrs. John (Maureen) Cavanaugh of Pierre, and Mrs. Marvin (Micaela) Nelson of Mitchell; eight grandchildren; four step-grandchildren and four step-great-grandchildren; and one sister, Ruth Seiler of Aurora.
She was preceded in death by six brothers and one sister.
A memorial has been established to a scholarship fund for Midland area graduates.
