Winifred "Win" A. Norton

of Rapid City, South Dakota, formerly of Kadoka, South Dakota, died on Friday, March 20, 1987
at the Hillview Nursing Home in Rapid City at the age of 86

Winifred A. Norton, better known as "Win" to her family and friends, was born October 4, 1900, at Wagner, South Dakota, to Patrick and Ellen (Ward) Norton.

In 1905 she came with her parents to western South Dakota where they homesteaded seven miles northwest of what is now Kadoka in Old Stanley County.

Winifred attended Franklin District rural school and Kadoka High School.  After attending Spearfish Normal she taugh school in Jackson and Haakon County rural schools.  She then taught 17 years in the Philip school system.  In 1941 she moved to Salem, Oregon, and taught school there and in Portland, Oregon.

She moved to California and taught school in Oakland and San Francisco schools.

Winifred received her BH degree from Black Hills Teachers College in Spearfish and her Master's degree from the University of Oregon.

In 1972 she retired from teaching and returned to her home at Kadoka, and from there moved to Rapid City in 1974.  She has been a resident of the Hillview Nursing Home since 1984.

Winifred was a member of the Cathedral of Our Lady of Perpetual Help of Rapid City, and the AARP of California.

Grateful for having shared her life are her three brothers, Bill of Kadoka, James and his wife, Mable, of Portland, Oregon, and Frank and his wife, Eleanor, of Huron, South Dakota; several nieces and nephews; and a host of other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, Tom and Larry Norton, and two sisters, Kate and Mary Norton.
