Lily Mary Schroeder

Lily Mary Connelly, daughter of Martin and Emma (Weinkoetz) Connelly, was born June 4, 1915, at Highmore, South Dakota.

Her father worked on the railroad, so they lived in several towns in western South Dakota, including Creston and Box Elder, where she received her elementary education, and later in Belvidere, South Dakota.  She graduated from St. Martin's Academy in Sturgis in 1934, and attended Notre Dame College in Mitchell, South Dakota, before graduating from Black Hills State College with a BA degree in elementary education.

She taught school in Creighton, Pedro, and the Wall areas for 29 years.

She was united in marriage to Ferdinand Anton Schroeder on June 14, 1938, at Belvidere, South Dakota.  They ranched north of Creighton until her husband's death on September 18, 1968.  She continued to live on the ranch until moving into Wall in November of 1970.

After retiring from her teaching career in 1979, Lily spent the summer months working at the Wall Drug Store and her winter months traveling through every state in the United States and some European countries.

Lily was a member of the St. Patrick's Catholic Church, the Farmers Union, and the Royal Neighbors, all of Wall.  Lily was also a 49-year member of the Creighton Bee's Extension Club and was a 4-H leader for over 30 years.

Grateful for having shared her life are her two sons, Veryl Schroeder of Wall, South Dakota, and Cletus Schroeder of Denver, Colorado; four daughters, Rose Mary Swanson of Scottsdale, Arizona, Anne Foster of Rapid City, South Dakota, Catherine Harrington of Huron, South Dakota, and Theresa Schroeder of Denver, Colorado; 18 grandchildren; one brother, Joseph Connelly of Rapid City, South Dakota; one sister, Rose Duguid of Rockford, Illinois; and a host of other relatives and friends.

In addition to her husband, Ferdinand, she was preceded in death by her parents, and three brothers in infancy.
