George A. Kennedy

of Philip, South Dakota, died on Sunday, May 25, 1986
at the Philip Nursing Home in Philip at the age of 92

George A. Kennedy was born January 22, 1894, on a farm near Osceola, Iowa, to Homer and Susan (Marquis) Kennedy.  At the age of five he moved with his parents to a farm near Henry, South Dakota, before moving to a homestead in the Grindstone area, northwest of Philip, in 1906.  He grew up there.

He was a rural mail carrier between Cottonwood and Dowling for four years.

He was united in marriage to Anna Marie Howe on June 10, 1916, in Pierre, South Dakota.

They farmed and ranched in the Grindstone area until 1952 when they semi-retired and moved into Philip.  George continued to be active in the farming and ranching operation with two of his sons, Howard and Wayne.

George and Anna enjoyed watching and supporting the sports activities in the Grindstone, Cottonwood, and Philip areas and both received lifetime passes from the Philip High School Athletic Assocation in 1954.

Anna preceded him in death on August 2, 1979.

In 1981 the Philip High School Yearbook was dedicated to him, and in January 1982 he received the Loyal Spectatorship Award form the Philip High School cheerleaders, which was one of his favorite awards.

George was presented the Distinguished Service Award from the South Dakota High School Activities Assocation during the state basketball tournament in Rapid City in 1982 for his continued support to sports activities for 60 plus years.

George attended the Presbyterian Church of Philip.  His hobbies and interests were his association with horses, first with the draft horses and then the quarterhorses and pleasure horses.  He was an avid card player and enjoyed whist and other card games.

Survivors include two sons, Howard Kennedy of Philip, and Robert "Bob" Kennedy of Sioux Falls; one daughter, Mrs. John (Doris) Billington of Kaiserslautern, Germany; 22 grandchildren; 33 great-grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends.

In addition to his wife, Anna, he was preceded in death by two sons, Wayne "Duck" and Bryce Kennedy; his parents; three brothers, Albert, James, and Don; and three sisters, Artie Hatfield, Bess Rausch, and Rachael Welling.
