Frances C. Fortuneof Philip, South Dakota, died on Friday, December 20, 1985

Frances C. McCloskey was born the daughter of Henry and Jane (Weir) McCloskey on November 23, 1894, on a farm near Kinsman, Illinois. She grew up and attended school in that area.
In 1911 she moved with her family to a farm near Sioux Falls that her father had purchased. They shipped their horses and milk cows from back in Illinois to South Dakota.
She was united in marriage to Roland Fortune on November 27, 1912, in Sioux Falls at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church.
They moved out to the Grindstone area, north of Philip, in 1918 where they had purchased a ranch. They operated the ranch, though they moved into Philip in 1958, until Roland's death on November 25, 1970.
Frances was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, the Church Altar Society, and the Bad River Senior Citizens Center, all of Philip.
Grateful for having shared her life are her four sons, John Fortune and Howard Fortune, both of Quinn, South Dakota, Eugene "Bud" Fortune of Cottonwood, South Dakota, and Vern Fortune of Miles City, Montana; four daughters, Darlene Moreland of Coeur-d-Alene, Idaho, Marie Mortellaro of Philip, Maxine Nixon of Belle Fourche, South Dakota, and Vera Nelson of Philip; 40 grandchildren; 78 great-grandchildren; 6 great-great-grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends.
In addition to her husband, Roland, she was preceded in death by her parents, five grandchildren, three brothers, and four sisters.
