Charles W. Baker was born January 26, 1894, at Doland, South Dakota, to Latimer and Mary Baker and grew up in the Clark County area. He later moved with his parents to a homestead in Mellette County.
Charles taught school at Lucas in 1915 and during World War I served in the U.S. Navy, making 26 crossings of the Atlantic aboard a transport ship.
On June 4, 1922, he was united in marriage to Mae Kenzy at Lucas. They farmed east of White River, moving into White River in 1939.
Charles was Mellette County treasurer and auditor from 1934 until 1941, and in 1941 moved to Philip, where he was Farmers Home Administration supervisor until 1954.
In 1954, he was elected Haakon County treasurer and served for four years. From 1958 to 1973 he was Haakon County auditor and was county veterans service officer from 1960 until he retired in 1976.
He was a member of the International Order of Odd Fellows and the Masonic Lodge #153, which he served as secretary for 31 years. He was also a charter member of the American Legion Post at White River and was a member of the American Leigon and Veterans of Foreign Wars at Philip.
Survivors include two sons, Ray and Robert Baker of Philip; one daughter, Mrs. Tom (Mary Ellen) Cross, of Yankton; 11 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren; one brother, Fred Baker of Sugarland, Texas; and a host of other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Mae; one son, Clell; two brothers; and two sisters.
A memorial has been established.
