Iris Florence Romero was born September 7, 1937, near Wanblee, South Dakota, to Vetal and Nancy (Quiver) Romero. She was raised in the Wanblee/Kadoka area and graduated from Kadoka High School in 1956. Later she would receive her teaching degree and taught Kindergarten.
Iris was united in marriage to Leland Bearheels on September 7, 1957, and to this union ten children were born.
Iris loved doing word puzzles and attending her grandchildren’s sporting events.
Survivors include her husband, Leland, of Kadoka; four sons, Jerome Lee of Aberdeen, Ryan of Kadoka, Harold of Aberdeen, and Sheldon of Sioux Falls; four daughters, Robin of Seattle, Washington, Christle of Albuquerque, New Mexico; DeAnn of Rapid City, and Laurel of Kadoka; 21 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren; two brothers Aloysius Romero of Wanblee, and Ferdinand Romero of Wanblee; and a host of other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Vetal and Nancy; a son, Craig; a daughter, Jewel; a granddaughter, Krisene; her grandparents, uncles and numerous cousins.
Visitation was held 5-7 p.m. Friday, June 5, at the Presbyterian Church in Kadoka.
Funeral services were held 1:00 p.m. Saturday, June 6, at the Presbyterian Church in Kadoka, with Pastor Gary McCubbin officiating.
Interment was at the Kadoka Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family is accepting donations for the Iris Bearheels memorial scholarship. Scholarship donations may be sent to BankWest of Kadoka, P.O. Box 69, Kadoka, SD 57543.
