Karyl Anne (Kittelson) Sandal was born in Watertown, South Dakota to Elwin and Harriet (Muller) Kittelson. She was the youngest of seven children. She attended grade school at a country school near the family farm in Henry, South Dakota. Karyl graduated from Augustana Academy in Canton, South Dakota in May of 1960. She then attended Augustana College in Sioux Falls, South Dakota and worked there until she was united in marriage to John William “Bill” Sandal on June 16, 1962 (59 years ago) at Grace Lutheran Church in Watertown, South Dakota.
They lived in Chadron, Nebraska for three years while Bill was attending college. After Bill graduated, they moved to Milesville in 1965 where they raised their six children: Tami, Tricia, Todd, Monte, Michelle and Matt. The family later moved to Philip while the children attended high school.
Karyl worked as a dietary aid at the school and the hospital before going to work in the Register of Deeds Office as Deputy Register in 1984. She was elected Haakon County Register of Deeds in January 1991 and served that office until she retired in 2010.
Karyl became an EMT-B in December 1996 and served with the Philip Ambulance Service for many years. She gave piano lessons for over 20 years and was a church pianist in both Milesville and Philip. Karyl loved to bake and made many decorated wedding and event cakes along with many baked goods for the community. She was known for always wanting to feed people and keep them warm. Her caramel rolls and rollie pollies kept people around her table and she made many quilts for her children and grandchildren.
