Hazel Harnisch

of Philip, South Dakota, died on Wednesday, June 26, 1985
at the Hans P. Peterson Memorial Hospital in Philip at the age of 74

Hazel C. Tietz was born on May 26, 1911, on a farm near Mt. Vernon, South Dakota, to Frank and Mary (Bradwisch) Tietz. She grew up and received her education in Mt. Vernon.

Hazel was united in marriage to Erwin T. Buhmann Sr. on October 6, 1936, at her parent's residence near Mt. Vernon. They farmed near Mt. Vernon until moving to the Milesville are in 1951, where they operated a ranch. In 1954 they moved into Philip. She was employed as a clerk for a grocery store in Philip for several years. Her husband, Erwin, preceded her in death on March 22, 1963.

In 1965 Hazel moved to Rapid City where she was employed as an aid at a nursing home for one year before moving to Custer where she was employed at the State Hospital. She moved back to Philip in 1967.

Hazel was united in marriage to John Harnisch on August 18, 1967, at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in Philip. They continued to make their home in Philip. He preceded her in death in November 1970. She then became employed as a dietary aid at the Philip Nursing Home and also a waitress at the Park Inn Café for several years.

In 1982 she moved into her own home located near her daughter on the Newman Ranch west of Philip. She retired in January of 1984.

Survivors include four sons, Roger Buhmann of Philip, Erwin Buhmann Jr. of Rochford, Illinois, Dennis Buhmann of Crystal Beach, Texas, and Donald Buhmann of Scottsdale, Arizona; one daughter, Donna Newman of Philip; two step-daughters, Elvera Moos of Philip and Echo Rockafellow of Geddes, South Dakota; 19 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren; three sisters, Minnie Tietz of Plankinton, South Dakota, and Edith Hohback and Helen Schrank both of Mt. Vernon, South Dakota; and a host of other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, Erwin Buhmann Sr.; her parents; one brother, Elmer Tietz; and one sister, Amanda Fett.
