Herbert Huberof Norris, South Dakota, died on Tuesday, December 1, 2020

Herbert Fredrick Huber was born December 19, 1931 in Murdo, South Dakota to Otto and Helena (Schmidt) Huber. Herbert grew up on his family farm in Mellette county and attended grade school at Prairie View School. Herbert was drafted into the Army on November 13, 1952. He often told the story that he walked to the mailbox and caught a ride with the mailman to Mission, then with another mailman to Winner where he got on a bus then repeated this same process home after he was discharged.
Herbert was stationed and spent 1 year, 3 months, and 26 days in Korea. He was awarded many honors and medals for his dedicated service. He received the National Defense service medal, Korean service medal with two bronze service stars, United Nations Service medal, good conduct medal, and the Meritorious United Commendation. Herbert rarely spoke of his time in the war, but the few times that he did he spoke of intense battles and the fight for survival in the cold snowy mountains of Korea. Herbert returned from Korea and was honorably discharged on September 1, 1954, and at that time he returned back to the farm to work.
On January 8, 1955, Herbert married the love of his life, Deloris Krogman. Herbert and Deloris were happily married for 45 years until her death in 2000. Although Herbert and Deloris had no children of their own, Herbert was known as “Uncle Boo-Boo” to many of them. Herbert could brighten anybody’s day with his smile and piercing blue eyes. He had a heart of gold and would help anyone in need.
Herbert was a master mechanic who could fix or rebuild anything. Some of Herbert’s hobbies included driving semi-trucks in the 70’s, running combines, working hard, and visiting with his family, especially his nieces and nephews. Herbert’s niece Kenda was instrumental in taking Herbert to the V.A. for doctor’s appointments and bringing him groceries and meals in the years he lived alone. He met with his preacher regularly and attended church services when he could. Herbert had recently taken communion before his death. As most of you know, Herbert was very particular about his appearance and was not about to have gray hair or be overweight. He spoke several times a week to his nephew Leon which usually consisted of boasting that he was still at 187 pounds, the same weight he kept for many years! How is that little Lorelei, does she still have those blue eyes like me? And these nurses tell me they would like my secret for staying trim, and they need to go on a diet. I tell them well just quit eating so damn much, it’s not hard!
Survivors include nephews and nieces: Bill (Kenda) Huber, Leon (Kelsey) Huber, Leslie Huber, Dixie Huber, Debra Willert, Lyndon (Colleen) Huber, Torey Huber, Donna Huber, Nathan Huber, Karen Emmert, and a host of great and great-great-nieces and nephews; as well as many other beloved family members and friends.
Herbert was preceded in death by his wife Deloris; his parents; three brothers, Donald, Virgil, and Alvin; one sister, Ellen Emeritt; and nieces Anita and Annalyn.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be directed to the family at P.O. Box 152 Norris, SD 57560 to be put towards funeral expenses.
A visitation will be held from 12 - 2 p.m. CST on Monday, December 7, at the Tiwahe ed Wacikiyapi Episcopal Church in Norris. A graveside service will then follow at 2 p.m. CST at the Norris Cemetery.
