Louis F. "Dick" Block

of Midland, South Dakota, died on Sunday, September 11, 2016
at the Philip Nursing Home at the age of 88

Louis F. Block, better known as “Dick” by his family and friends, was born January 31, 1928, in Ft. Pierre, South Dakota, to Fred and Clara (Jeitz) Block. He preceded in birth by his twin sister Louise Clara Block when the twins were born. When the twins were brought home to the farm south of Capa, their Grandpa renamed them “Dick and Dolly”, from a team of his horses.

Dick grew up on the farm and attended White Bell Country School through the 8th grade. His freshman year he attended school in Philip then spent the rest of his high school years in Midland before graduating in 1946.

He held various jobs including working on the railroad and in Murray’s Grocery Store.

Dick was united in marriage to Betty Ann Finck on June 12, 1949 in Rapid City, South Dakota. Dick and Betty were married in a double ring ceremony with Dick’s twin sister, Dolly and Leonard Blucher.

In 1962 they went on a trip to the World’s Fair in Seattle. They enjoyed farming and ranching and had a variety of animals including 35 horses, milk cows, and 500-600 head of hogs.

In 2010 they were awarded the Century Farm Award. Dick enjoyed his life, friends, family, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. He was known for his sense of humor and made friends wherever he went. He was a member of the White Bell School Board for many years and a South Creek Township Board Member for 35 years.

Survivors include his wife of 67 years, Betty Block of Midland, three sons, Dean (Sherrie) Block, Gary (Jody) Block, and Brad (Scotti) Block all of Midland; five grandchildren and sixteen great-grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents Fred and Clara; his sisters, Rose Marie Peterson and twin sister Dolly Blucher; and his step-father, Wayne Hawley.
