Elizabeth "Betty" VanderMayof Kadoka, South Dakota, died on Sunday, February 3, 2019

Elizabeth Jane “Betty” Nemec was born April 6, 1930, the oldest of 18 children born to Edward and Elizabeth (Puryear) Nemec. Betty grew up on a farm-ranch near Midland, South Dakota, and received her education at Phoeba Rural School before graduating from Midland High School in 1948. Betty attended Black Hills State College after her high school graduation and received a teaching certificate. She taught in a one-room school in Stanley county for two years.
Betty was united in marriage to Loyd VanderMay on July 1st, 1950, at St. Elizabeth Catholic Church in Midland. They made their home on a ranch near Long Valley. Betty and Loyd were blessed with 12 children and 47 grandchildren, along with numerous great-grandchildren.
Betty was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church of Norris until it closed, when she became a member of Our Lady of Victory Catholic Church in Kadoka. Loyd passed away on December 15, 1993. Betty remained on the ranch until 2002, when she bought a home and moved to Kadoka. Since 2011, Betty has resided at the Kadoka Nursing Home.
Betty enjoyed sewing and quilting and made many beautiful items for her family. She enjoyed embroidering and was able to continue that hobby until the time of her death.
Betty was involved in many community activities throughout her life including serving on the Kadoka Nursing Home Board, the Community Action Program, and in other various capacities at Sacred Heart Catholic Church and Our Lady of Victory Catholic Church. Betty also served as a Jackson County Commissioner.
Survivors include 11 children Katherine (Bob Karlen) Phillips of Couer D’Alene, Idaho, Charles (Janet) VanderMay of Kadoka, Mary (Jerry) Setera of Miles City, Montana, Marjorie (Jerry Joe) Donovan of Martin, Angela (Ken) Bertalot of Gillette, Patrick (Kim) VanderMay of Norris, Daniel (Annette) VanderMay of Long Valley, Stephen (Vickie) VanderMay of Long Valley, Suzanne Hoon of Kadoka, Janice (Charles) Conlee of Rapid City, Joan (Mark) Miller of Fremont, Nebraska; 44 grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren; 11 siblings Joseph (Evie) Nemec of West Des Moines, Iowa, Frances Terkildsen of Kadoka, Pauline (William) Bruce of Hayes, Christine Ryan of Tolna, North Dakota, Leo (Betty) Nemec of Little Fork, Minnesota, Audrey (Gene) Jones of Midland, Benjamin (Kathy) Nemec of Highmore, Anthony (LaVon) Nemec of Gillette, Bernadette (Dick) Knox o f Highmore, Michael (Susan) Nemec of Midland, and Rita Foreng of Sioux Falls; three sisters-in-law Glenda Nemec of Bristol, Barbara Nemec of Highmore, and Norma VanderMay of Long Valley; and a host of other relatives and friends.
In addition to her husband Loyd, Betty was preceded in death by one son John VanderMay; three grandchildren Christopher VanderMay, Theresa Setera, and Anthony Hoon; her parents; two brothers Mark Nemec and Edward Nemec; four sisters Nora Wymen, Sister Edna Nemec, Winifred Bergeson, and Mary Ann Nemec as an infant; two sons-in-law Paul Phillips and Fred Hoon; two sisters-in-law Irene Zickrick and Bertie VanderMay; and seven brothers-in-law Raymond Terkildsen, Gary Ryan, Charles Wyman, Arthur Bergeson. Kenneth Zickrick, Harry VanderMay, and Francis VanderMay.
Visitation will be held 5-7 p.m. on Friday, February 8, 2019, at Our Lady of Victory Catholic Church in Kadoka, with a vigil service at 7:00 p.m.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10:00 a.m. Saturday, February 9, at Our Lady of Victory Catholic Church in Kadoka, with Father Tyler Dennis as celebrant.
Interment will be at the Kadoka Cemetery.
A memorial has been established to the Kadoka Nursing Home.
