In memory of

Alicia McQuirk

of Philip, South Dakota, died on Tuesday, July 1, 2014 at the Mayo Clinic Hospital St. Mary's Campus in Rochester at the age of 36

Alicia I. McQuirk was born March 25th, 1978, in Philip, South Dakota, the daughter of Ralph and Julie (Slovek) McQuirk. She grew up and received her education in Philip. During her high school years, Alicia worked at the Philip Nursing Home and in the summer she worked in Wall, South Dakota. After graduating from Philip High School in 1996, Alicia worked as a CNA at several nursing homes in Rapid City, Bella Vista, Clarkson, and Fountain Springs.

Due to illness and hospitalization, she was no longer able to work. She occupied her time crocheting, knitting, making jewelry, playing with her dog Gizmo, and playing dominoes with Grandma Mary.

Survivors include her parents Ralph and Julie McQuirk; one brother Elliot McQuirk; and her maternal grandmother Mary Slovek, all of Philip. A special family friend in Alicia’s life was Jennifer (Elshere) Kennedy of Las Vegas, who lived with Alicia’s family during her high school years.

Alicia was preceded in death by her paternal grandparents Carol and Ed McQuirk; her maternal grandfather Frank Slovek; and a cousin Chris Poper.

Visitation was held from 5-8 p.m. Sunday, July 6, at the Rush Funeral Home in Philip, and one hour preceding the services at the legion hall on Monday.

Funeral services were held 11:00 a.m. Monday, July 7, at the American Legion Hall in Philip, with Pastor Gary Wahl officiating.

Interment was at the Masonic Cemetery in Philip.

A memorial has been established. Cards and memorials may be sent to P.O. Box 582, Philip, SD 57567.

  • Dear Ralph, Julie, Elliot, Mary and family
We were so sad to hear of Alicia's death. She certainly fought the battle for so many years, and with a very good attitude whenever we saw her. The loss of a grandchild leaves a huge aching hole in your heart, and I cannot imagine the loss of a child. My heart aches for all of you and I pray that the days, weeks, and months ahead are made more possible by the support of all your family and friends and the thoughts of our wonderful Savior. Faith seems to be the one thing that brings a sense of Peace. Love and prayers for better tomorrows.
